CRA Attends the First Session of the Council of Administration of the Universal Postal Union of 2019

The Communications Regulatory Authority (CRA) is attending the first session of the Council of Administration (CA) of the Universal Postal Union (UPU), which is held at UPU headquarters in Berne, Switzerland from 8-12 April 2019.

The five-day session discusses different postal subjects related to the work of UPU and includes a conference on postal regulation covering topics like competition and policy options. The CA discusses various postal topics such as regulatory, administrative, financial, legal, economic and commercial issues. In addition, to ensure that the UPU is able to react quickly to changes in the postal sector, the CA has the power to approve proposals by the Postal Operations Council for the adoption of regulations or new procedures until the next Universal Postal Congress, which convenes every four years.

“CRA ensured to participate actively in this important international postal event with the aim of increasing the exposure of CRA at relevant international postal meetings and forums as the new postal regulator in Qatar, and to keep abreast of current key changes and challenges that the postal sector is facing worldwide and which have an influence on the sector's regulations. All this will help the CRA to fulfill its mandate and develop effective postal regulatory frameworks, which are in line with the latest international best practices, taking into consideration the characteristics of the Qatari market, and that for the benefit of both stakeholders and consumers in Qatar,” said Eng. Faisal Ali Al-Shuaibi, Public Relations and Communications Manager, CRA.

The UPU is a United Nations specialized agency, established in 1874 and one of the world’s oldest international organizations. The UPU is the primary forum for cooperation between postal sector players and has now 192 member countries; Qatar is a member of the UPU since 1969.
