CRA Meets with the European Telecommunications Standards Institute

The Communications Regulatory Authority (CRA) met last week at its headquarters with a delegation from the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI). The delegation’s visit to Qatar expended from March 4 - March 7, 2019, and meetings aimed at enhancing the relations and cooperation between the CRA and ETSI in the field of Information and Communications Technology (ICT), particularly standards development and recognition.

During the meetings, ETSI presented their role and responsibilities in relation to the development of related international standards. ETSI also socialized the benefits of standards to support development of ICT. CRA briefed the delegation about its mandate and role in addition to the latest technologies, developments and achievements of the ICT sector in Qatar. 

“The CRA welcomes ETSI’s visit. We ensure that Qatar leads in ICT at regional level; to this end, the CRA maintains regular communications with related International organizations, to stay up to date with the latest developments in the ICT sector and with international standards in particular. This in turn contributes to Qatar's early standards adoption and to the development of the sector taking into consideration international best practices and standards, which lead to the assurance of the provision of smart, innovative, and high-quality services to the consumers in Qatar,” said Eng. Abdulla Jassmi, Technical Affairs Department Manager, CRA.

As part of the visit, ETSI met with the telecom service providers, Qatar Foundation, the College of the North Atlantic - Qatar, Texas A&M University, Carnegie Mellon University, Hamad Bin Khalifa University, Qatar University, Qatar Mobility Innovations Center (QMIC), and Msheireb Properties. The meetings included discussions about the standards adopted by these entities and ways of cooperation between them and ETSI.

ETSI is a nonprofit organization and is one of only three bodies officially recognized by the European Union as a European Standards Organization in the field of telecommunications, broadcasting and other electronic communications networks and services. ETSI membership includes more than 850 member organizations from over 60 countries and five continents. ETSI provides benefits to the members; access to the most up-to-date information on global ICT standards and direct participation in standards development.
