With the summer travel seasons upon us, the Supreme Council of Information and Communication Technology (ictQATAR) is urging consumers in Qatar to be aware of the high cost of data roaming service while outside of Qatar. ictQATAR developed a series of tips for consumers on how data roaming services work, how to avoid “bill shock” from high roaming rates, and how to disable roaming on a variety of handsets.
“Consumers travelling abroad during the summer vacation need to be aware that data roaming charges will apply when using a mobile device with internet connection. Generally, data roaming rates are quite high because of the amount operators must pay to gain access to the networks of operators in various countries. We advise consumers to disable data roaming when traveling and use wi-fi access where possible. If data roaming is necessary, consumers should be certain to check the rates with their service provider before accessing the service,” said Dr. Eiman Al-Ansari, ictQATAR Manager of Consumer Affairs.
Data roaming applies to any phone handset with Internet capability, and also includes tablet devices, such as the iPad.
The full detailed tips on how to keep your data roaming bills down, including how to disable data roaming on various handsets and devices is available on ictQATAR’s website at www.ictqatar.qa. ictQATAR has also prepared tips on international roaming calls, which are also available on its website.
